Giovanni Guagliardo – baritone

Born in Augusta in 1980, Giovanni Guagliardo began his musical studies in Catania (Sicily) and since his operatic debut at the Taormina Opera Festival in 2010, he’s been singing in Italian opera houses and festivals.

As a young singer, Guagliardo has been perfecting his craft at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Teatro del Giglio di Lucca, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Verdi di Pisa, Teatro Sociale di Mantova, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Teatro Bellini di Catania, Teatro della Fortuna di Fano, Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, Teatro Regio di Parma, Teatro Vittorio Emanuele di Messina, Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, Teatro delle Muse di Ancona, Festival Puccini di Torre del Lago, National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Teatro La Scala di Milano.

He appears with such important conductors as Bruno Campanella, Daniel Harding, Daniel Oren, Hubert Soudant, Eve Queler, Marc Soustrot, Bruno Bartoletti and Myung-Whun Chung, and with such directors as Maurizio Scaparro, Keita Asari, Pippo Crivelli, Giuliano Montaldo, Calixto Bieto, Giancarlo del Monaco, Lamberto Puggelli , and Gilbert Deflo.

In Italy and New York his roles are Ping in Turandot in La Coruna, Masetto in Don Giovanni and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut at the Teatro Bellini di Catania, Shaunard in La bohème at the Carlo Felice’s theathre in Genova, Sulpice in La fille du régiment at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Marcello in La bohème at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut and Jake Wallace in La fanciulla del West at the Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago and Don Diego in L’Africaine with the Opera Orchestra of New York and Gualtiero in Edgar at Carnegie Hall.

In 2014/15 he sang Faurè’s Requiem at the Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” di Catania, Sonora in La fanciulla del West at the Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago, Marullo in Rigoletto during a tour in Beijing with Teatro Regio di Parma and Marcello in La bohème at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.

The 2012/13 season saw him as Marcello in La Boheme in Wichita Grand Opera and Montano in Otello at the Thèatre des Champs Elysèes de Paris, Frederic in Lakmè in Palma de Mallorca.

He opened the 2010/11 season performing Marcello in La bohème at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” di Catania, Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) at the Hamburger Staatsoper, Francesca da Rimini (Ostasio) at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste and Terzaghi in a world premiere of Leoncavallo’s Mameli.

During the 2011/12 season he performed as Marullo in Rigoletto in Oman with the Teatro Regio di Parma, Carmen (Morales) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Andrea Chenier (Mathieu) in Milan, Battaglia di Legnano (Marcovaldo) in Trieste, Turandot (Ping) in Genova and I Pagliacci (Silvio) in Florida, Don Giovanni (Leporello) at the Teatro della Fortuna di Fano, Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) at the Teatro Bellini di Catania and Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) at the Mikhailovky theatre in San Petersburg.

The year 2016 will see him in Boheme (Marcello) at the Taormina Opera Festival, Traviata (Germont) at the Teatro Bellini di Catania and Pagliacci (Tonio) in Charlotte Opera Carolina.
